The following narrative was included as part of the application for historic designation to the Texas Historical Commission.

TrainWhen donation of railroad right-of-way was rejected by the Silesian/Polish community of St. Hedwig, in east Bexar County, the San Antonio and Gulf Shore Railroad created the flag stations of Adkins and Carpenter in 1894 to serve the area.

Alamo

There are lines that when crossed result in irrevocable commitment. Soldiers instinctively know these lines where combat becomes an imminent reality.

During the Texas Revolution the Rio Cibolo was such a line: 30 miles to the east, Gonzales of the De Witt Colony bristled with Texians seeking redress to their complaints; 22 miles to the west San Antonio de Bexar, was a fortified outpost of Mexico.

Crossing the Cibolo changed the lives of men and the destiny of Texas.

post oakCottage Hill came into existence and disappeared in the blink of an eye. Scattered stones from the hearths and foundations of homes, artifacts plowed into the sands, are all that remain of a place hidden by time. Only a few newspaper accounts and government records attest to its existence.

EAGLE PASS, September 27, 1882, San Antonio Express — I have wandered around this town considerably and see many improvements.  Several stores and residences are now going up. Louis Dolch, Mr. Hochstetter, Mrs. A. Burke who was recently burned out, Jones, Thomas and others are improving.  Called on Max Oppenheimer who is doing a good business.  He says that at times he is unable to wait on his customers. Riddle and others are in the same fix.
